Pleasure vs Happiness

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Pleasure is not sufficient

A satisfying massage at spa, trying out food in a fancy restaurant, a day well spent are all about short lived pleasure. It can be experienced from objects, people and circumstances. It is easily forgotten. Sometimes, it is accompanied with other emotions like guilt and regret. It is a temporary fix and unreliable. It is unstable; one day it’s there, the next day it may not be.

Pleasure is something that has been marketed to us. We use it to numb and distract ourselves from the problems we have. Ask someone who committed adultery and lost the family how his/her pursuit of pleasure turned out. Ask a man who is imprisoned for crimes whether pleasure ultimately made him happy.

Happiness is eternal

Happiness is when we feel free and have nothing in mind to worry about. It is felt within. It lasts longer and end up being a memory to be cherished forever. We always seek happiness but end up sufficing the search with pleasure. It is connected to the state of mind and heart. Yes, there is going to be a lot of ups and downs in life. Things go wrong and shit happens in life. Relationships upset us. But thats the part of a life.

Letting go of the expected result is important. Goals and dreams are just a way to keep your ass off the couch. It does not matter if they come true or not. Live your life, man. Just live! Stop TRYING to be happy and just be! It is as simple as that.

At the end of the day, it lies in our hands to choose to have either a momentary pleasure or a happy life. So do not just sit around and complaint about not experiencing anything at all!
