5 reasons why bats are interesting creatures

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I haven’t researched about bats on Google before all this pandemic mess. But when the whole world was against China consuming bats, I had to look up on internet what all the frenzy is about! Honestly, I gaged up a little in my mouth as I saw videos of people have the “infamous” soup. Then I really got too curious about the mammal. I have seen small bats flying around in the night time and also, in movies at a closeup shots of an abandoned house or an unexplored cave! The curiosity really triggered me to know more about these “gentle creatures” (haha, I know it sounds like a cliched word from an ‘animal planet’ documentary).

Bats are the only mammals that can fly.

There are flying squirrels, but they don’t technically fly. They only glide from one tree to another. It also gives us a picture of prehistoric mammals that are capable of flight like the flying dinosaurs!

Bat droppings (aka) guano can be used to make gunpowder and explosives.

Bat guano are rich in potassium nitrate and used as fertiliser. They were used for manufacturing explosives in the American civil war. How cool is that? So next time when you spot a bat dropping, do not underestimate it’s value! 😛

Largest bat is a flying fox!

There are about 1200 species of bats in the world. And one kind of them is a flying fox because of it’s fox face. Not kidding! It is low key scary. On the other hand, it’s features also look like a cute doggo!

Bats use echolocation signals to navigate in the dark.

A chapter about echolocation in our middle school was something like a sorcery! Many small bats use their sound waves to navigate and find food in the dark. The bigger bats can also see better than other mammals. They use both echolocation and sight in the search of prey.

There are 3 different kinds of blood sucking vampire bats!

Does that mean vampires are real? Not sure about that yet! But vampire bats do not kill humans to drink blood. Some of these bats carry a deadly disease called rabies. And there are many people who die from rabies in Latin America.
