Chapter 9

Reprisal

The black XUV pulled over into the parking lot at 5 pm. He entered the cafe, looking down at his phone.

“Hello Sakura. Where are you?”

“Hi CJ! Look to your left,” she said and hung up the phone.

Sakura smiled when she saw him glance at her.

He walked silently to her as he measured every word he was about to say. “Oh well, what a pleasant surprise. You’re here before me.”

Sakura looked up at him with her head titled to one side, “Yeah, why should only men be a gentleman?”

“You look dashing in this black dress, gentlewoman!” he praised as he sat down at the table.

“Uh, thank you!”

Sakura forced a smile and gazed up at his face.

He kept his dark black oiled hair away from his face, exposing his wide forehead. He looked tall and lean in the black outfit, and wore a smile that revealed his chipped front tooth.

She looked away, nervously.

He leaned forward, putting his arm on the table. “Why are you nervous?”

She tucked a lock of her chin length hair behind her ear, staring down at her cutlery. “Nope. I’m both nervous and excited as I’m finally going to learn to share dreams! So cool!”

A waiter hovered at the table, carrying a tray of cappuccinos, “Here you go. Enjoy!”

“Already? The customer service is so good here!” Sakura exclaimed, rushing her hand toward the tray. She was jolted when the cup flied through air and spewed it’s coffee onto his black t-shirt. “Oh my god! I’m so sorry CJ, I didn’t mean to-”

“That’s alright Sakura, calm down! But didn’t I tell you were nervous?” he laughed. There were deeper laughter lines around his intense black chilling eyes.

“I’m sorry again CJ!”

“Not a problem. I’ll go clean up the spill,” he said. “Please get another cappuccino,” he ordered the waiter and headed for the restroom.

There was an awkward silence once he returned to the table. “So when are you going to tell me the secret of your dream-sharing power…” she mouthed between slurps.

He leaned toward her and whispered, “Soon after this lovely cappuccino.”

He tipped the waiter while leaving the cafe. “Let me be a gentleman this time,” he said with a tilt of his head, holding the door for Sakura.

She smiled awkwardly and led him out of the cafe, “Thanks CJ!”

“Did you take a cab to reach here?”

“Yes, I did”

He lifted his head to the evening sky and closed his eyes. “Shouldn’t we be going for a drive in this climate?”

“Oh ye-yes,” she stammered.

As he was steering the car along the long highway, he switched on the bluetooth to play music.

‘Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you go on’

– My heart will go on by Celine Dion

“Ha, what a coincidence!” he grinned, looking at Sakura in the passenger seat. “Why are you quiet?”

“Nah, I’m just thinking about the super power and the kind of dreams I’d like to share with people…” she mumbled, looking at the highway through the window. “He’s going in the same direction,” she thought to herself.

He nodded subtly with a sly smile. “This is it Sakura. We have reached the destination,” he said as he turned left.

“Alright, that was a long ride,” Sakura breathed, pretending it was her first time.

He parked his car and hurried out to hold the door open for her on the other side. “There you go Sakura. This is where you are going to learn everything.” He continued walking on the narrow trail, “Follow me.”

Wind tossed her long hair, and she tied it up in a bun. “Are we there yet?”

He slowed down when they reached the house, “Oh yeah.” He approached the door, making way for her. “Go in.”

Sakura entered the house, hesitantly, “OK.”

It was very dark inside to see much. He quickly shut the door and switched on the light. He drew a knife from his t-shirt and pointed at her. “Sakura, it’s time for some fun. You sit here quietly” he snarled, “Do you have any idea why this is happening? You know what, you were the easiest prey out of all these people here!”

She smirked up at him.

“Why are you smiling bitch?”

She laid her head back on the chair, laughing out loud. “A dream is to have a dream. And you will never have a good dream, you bastard!”

“What?” he yelled, gasping for breath. He approached her unsteadily as his vision got blurry.

Sakura gave him a cold-eyed stare, “You’re poisoned.”
