Chapter 5

Unthankful

Sakura dozed off in front of the laptop. She woke up early next morning and grabbed her phone, “How did I end up sleeping 14 hours?!” She even had a dream about eating her favourite food at a restaurant. There were 2 missed calls from Razia in the call log. Sakura called her back and spoke to her. She also told her about last night dream. A couple of hours later, her phone rang up.

Sakura answered the phone and pretended to not be nervous, “Hello CJ!”

“Good Morning Sakura!”

“A very good morning!”

“Hope you enjoyed the feast that I served you at the restaurant in your dream!”

“I certainly did CJ! I loved it! You are a great waiter!”

He was surprised at her reply. “Thank you. I’m glad you loved it Sakura.”

“I can’t wait to meet you!”

“Let’s catch up for coffee in Amethyst at 5 pm tomorrow.”

“Finally! I’m looking forward to meeting you and learn this super dream-sharing trick!”

“You will. Alright, see you then beautiful,” he hung up the phone.

Sakura was disgusted, “Beautiful? I think I’m gonna barf – aargh!”

“Why would Razia want to prank me? I have no clue why she is still into this prank. Can’t she see that I’m hurting?” she thought. She tried recalling the undistinguished moments with Razia. They’ve been friends for more than 4 years now. Razia was the only earning member in her family. Her parents and brother had to scrape by on her one small salary.

Sakura was not sure about taking up this issue to her mother. “I’m sure this was not playfully intended!” She wondered. “Why would she do this to me?”

She suddenly remembered something that happened a few months ago. Razia had borrowed 15,000 Rupees from her for medical emergency. She did not bother to return the money as promised. There were many other petty incidents that dealt with money.

It all made sense to Sakura now. “Right, I think it’s time to find out the truth!” She decided to visit Razia at her place later in the evening after work.

It was 7 pm in the night. She called Razia on the phone once she reached the place. “Hi Razia, come out!”

“Hey, why?” Razia was confused about seeing Sakura at the other side of the door. “What are you doing here? Is everything alright?”

“Oh yeah, everything’s good! I was just bored. Can we go get an ice-cream?”

“Uh why not,” she said hesitantly. “You could have informed me before!”

“I just don’t feel like using my phone anymore.”

“Good for you. You need to take time off from all the social media frenzy. You seem so.. depressed lately. Oh well, we will get rid of that in a while. Give me 10 minutes, I just came back from work. I’ll go fresh up!” Razia put away her phone on the living room table and got in the bathroom.

Sakura looked around the living room and slowly sneaked through her phone. She knew the password to her phone a few months ago but did not bother to invade. She quickly scanned through the messages on WhatsApp. There was an archived conversation between Razia and someone whose contact name was saved as “Dope”. She scrolled to the beginning of the conversation.

Hit me up when you’re ready with money! You’re going to love this new baby! – Dope

Ahh I’m working on it! I’ll probably arrange money this week! – Razia

Great. Working on with your dumb friend Sakura again? What a weird name! – Dope

Haha, yes that same stupid bitch. – Razia

Lol – Dope

Sakura rocked back and forth, tears coursing down her cheeks. She quickly put away the phone back on hearing the door knob turn. She gathered herself amidst the shock and wore a fake smile.

“Ready?” asked Razia.

“You bet.”

They were at the table in a famous ice-cream shop. Razia fiddled with the spoon, “Sakura, would you do me a favour? It’s very urgent-”

“How much money do you need for the drugs?” Sakura smiled and looked her straight in the eyes.
