Chapter 10

The Last Dream

He fell to his knees, shaking his head, “You made a grave mistake..”

Sakura leaned across him and whispered, “Oh yes I did. I should have said goodbye instead.” Her insides quaked, but she breathed deeply to keep calm when his body collapsed at her feet. She called the cops as she began to untie the rope to free the victims.

The place was soon swarmed with siren screaming representatives of the law enforcement community and medical team. Sakura sighed, gazing into the night, “This is strange. It all started with the dream on my birthday night. And I’m here now, just done with saving lives. Life is crazy!”

The ambulance paramedics assisted on the scene and provided emergency treatment to the injured. An old lady who was held captive for a week, kissed Sakura, and gave her a pat on her shoulder. “Thanks. You’re brave!”

Sakura smiled, and that tiny dimple played at the corner of her full lip, “Take care.”

By the time she reached her home, Afra was asleep. She plunged into bed as soon as she entered her room. That night, for the first time in a week, she hoped to sleep better. On hearing a message notification, she stretched out for her phone on the dressing table. “Oh brother! what is it now?” she exclaimed in shock.

‘Hi. Incase you have deleted my number this is Razia. I’m sorry. What I did to you was wrong. Please forgive me. I’ll return all the borrowed money to you in sometime. I’m also trying to get sober. Take care.’

Sakura sat on the edge of the bed, contemplating whether it was wise to forgive Razia. She replied to the Whatsapp message, heaving a sigh.

‘Hi Razia, I just need time for myself now. Please don’t return the money back. Good luck, sober up fast. Cya!’

Exhausted by thought and emotion, she drifted into sleep as soon as she hit the pillow.

A week later Sakura resumed her everyday life. She was home from work and dropped off to sleep early. A man dressed up in all black with two kids at the basketball court stared at her, his expression sour.

“Hi, I’m Sakura. Do I know you?” she had stepped near him, until he kissed her. She woke to alarm on her phone and sat up, rubbing her eyes briskly. “Fuck no! It’s the same dream from my birthday night!”

She stumbled her steps to the living room and curled up on the couch near Afra.

“Looks like someone’s up so early today. Good morning honey!” Afra smiled, gently caressing Sakura’s cheeks.

“Ma, I just had an awesome dream…” she explained everything, hastily. “Ma, do you have any favourite dreams?”

Afra’s face was flushed from exertion and anger. “Just cut it out Sakura!” She walked across the kitchen and paused at the door. “I’ll get you coffee”

“Sheesh! What’s with Ma’s mood today?” she murmured, grabbing the newspaper. As she was skimming through the columns, Afra’s phone rang. “Hello… Ah bloody spam calls! No wonder old people get many of these!” she hung up. The lock-screen came up, flashing a wallpaper, ‘A dream is to have a dream.’

“What the..” Sakura threw the phone on the floor and glanced up at Afra who was holding a knife.
